Farewell Gorgeous George xx

I must say a very sad goodbye to Gorgeous George (racename George Washington) a magnificent son of Danehill who won the Phoenix Stakes & National Stakes in Ireland & 2000 Guineas & Queen Elizabeth II in England before his fragile temperament got the better of him. He'll probably be more famous for his flop year at stud although he may have a handful of mares in foal (details are sketchy but I live in hope) & the races he threw away by not being in a going mood but I'll never forget his brilliance as a two & three year old.

He tragically lost his life in Monmouth Park last night in the Breeders Cup Classic... although I can't help feeling he shouldn't even have been there. He was never going to like the sloppy conditions & didn't fire in the same race last year when more mentally stable but thats Coolmore for you. Cynics may even think they did it for the insurance money what with him being a dud at stud & all. Surely even they can't be that heartless?? The juries out on that one. Top Dog certainly thinks they couldn't ask for a better result. Not when they've the likes of Dylan Thomas on the roster.

And so I'm going back to my tears for THE single most sexiest horse (Lucarno being a distant second) in racing & the quirky enigma that was George. At least one person will miss you. Rest in peace gorgeous xx
